Just read your article on A Birthday Cake for George Washington on Huffington Post.
My condolences on how Scholastic basically undermined this book.
I would suggest you drop Scholastic, find your own illustrator and self publish.
Not only that. I would suggest you expand your book to cover the life of Hercules, even in historical fiction form. He sounds like an amazing person and I would like to read more about him. As a novel it could be released in e-book form, bypassing the need for a publisher. I would be interested in reading that.
I usually collect children's picture books but $50+ on amazon is too rich for me to purchase a copy of this book. But I would encourage you to rewrite it, find a different illustrator (one that will reflect your writing and who will work with you on conveying the true feelings of your story) and then release it under a different title with a different publisher. You could release it and other picture books on Hercules' life into a series.
I hope the ALA has an article regarding what happened to this book for their next Banned Books Week as this is an example of hidden censorship and book banning.
